Dear readers, recently, I was in shopping malls when I heard the song “Count on me Singapore”. The song was followed by other previous National Day songs for Singapore played in the malls. Whenever, we heard National Day songs played one after another, it means National Day is near.
I feel very nostalgic whenever I heard the song “Count on me Singapore” especially the starting part of the song. That starting part with no lyrics but just a mix of traditional music, to me, has just so much vibes on what constitutes Singapore! “Count on me Singapore” sent me back to my primary school days, when I could still recall being very impressed at the tall, magnificent and majestic skyscrapers and the former Supreme court at the Padang. Hence, till today, “Count on me Singapore” is still my most favourite National Day song, though many seem to prefer “Home” (“Home” is my favourite National Day song too!).
With National Day near, is it time Singapore investors becoming more interested in Singapore stocks, picking up Singapore stocks and leading to a rally in the Straits Times Index?
Well, to answer the above question, let us go back to the National Day period in previous years and take a look at the performance of the STI around these periods.
For Year 2020:
The STI was at 2,545.51 on 3 Aug 20 and at 2,581.32 on 10 Aug 20 (up by 1.4%)
For Year 2019:
The STI was at 3,168.94 on 5 Aug 19 and at 3,115.03 on 12 Aug 20 (down by 1.7%)
As we could see from the above, there is no clear “National Day Rally” for Singapore stocks if investors are thinking in the vein of “Santa Claus Rally”.
Singapore stocks markets are mainly price taker and major movements of our local stocks markets follow the movement of the larger overseas stocks markets like US and China.
