Dear readers, I read with concern the recent increasing number of community cases and unlinked cases. Today’s numbers seem to me one of the highest: 156 new community cases with almost half of these unlinked (79).
I understand the economical position that Singapore cannot be isolated from the rest of the world for a sustained period. I also understand that right now, from what I have been reading, in today’s Singapore where about 80% of our population has been vaccinated, the daily tally of new community cases may not be the numbers to watch out for but rather the number of the cases which requires medical interventions. But what is also concerning is that the Covid-19 could also break through the vaccination or the best forms of defence.
Hence, I thought it is timely right now to tighten some measures to reduce the daily Covid-19 numbers.
I know it is painful for those foodshops and F&B industry players to shut down or only provide for takeaways once again. I think a quicker and relatively less painful way to bring down our nation’s daily new community Covid-19 cases is simply to restore the Work-From-Home (WFH) arrangement.
Right now, up to 50% of the local workforce can go back to the office for work. The restoration to WFH will reduce movement in the community as well as the numbers of people dining in unmasked. More importantly, WFH will reduce the numbers of people commuting via public transport on the backdrop of a number of bus interchanges on our island being Covid-19 clusters right now.
These few weeks have been rainy weeks as well. I am of the view that the recent spate of raining days has kept more people outside in indoor spaces for a longer period. Take for example, diners spending longer period of time in foodshops and restaurants after meals to wait for the rain to stop. A longer period spent outside unmasked could meant more and longer period of exposure to the Covid-19 virus if any.
Hence, l hope everyone will work from home by default immediately. I am optimistic we can see daily number of Covid-19 community cases go down.
