Dear readers, the government announced that every Singapore citizen aged 18 and above will receive $100 SingapoRediscovers vouchers. The SingaporeRediscovers vouchers could be used on staycations, attraction tickets and tours that have been allowed to resume operations.
I understand the intent of the SingaporeRediscovers initiatives which is none other than to help the local tourism sector that has been impacted by Covid-19.
With all due respect to the SingaporeRediscovers, I find that the $100 vouchers for Singapore to rediscover Singapore rather modest in sum even though I recognise that these vouchers are meant as a token sum to encourage Singaporeans to spend more for local tourism sector so as to spur the local tourism industries. I have a feeling that some individuals and families feeling the brunt of the bearish economy may not take up the SingapoRediscovers vouchers given that they may end up still having to spend monies for a staycation or expenditure for local attractions as a family. I mean to be frank, prices of local attractions and hotels are not cheap.
Hence, why not make SingapoRediscovers vouchers donatable? Individuals who do not need the SingapoRediscovers vouchers could donate them to a centralised pool. The centralised pool could then allocate more of these vouchers to certain groups who may want more of these vouchers to fulfil a family staycation but who do not have the financial means to spend beyond the value of the vouchers? I know this may not be easy to implement in theory.
So why not make it such that individuals who do not need the SingapoRediscovers vouchers could donate the voucher value to charities with a one-to-one matching of dollar to the voucher value by the government? In this case, charities will benefit and the vouchers will be put to good use by individuals who do not need them.
