PHASE 3 HEIGHTENED ALERT TOMORROW! TOM K’S MESSAGE TO SINGAPOREANS

Dear readers, today is the last day of Phase 2 Heightened Alert. We are entering into Phase 3 Heightened Alert from tomorrow.  Phase 2 Heightened Alert lasted for about a month from 16 May to 13 Jun 2021 (both dates inclusive). During Phase 2 Heightened Alert, I decided not to jog unmasked outdoors as it might not be that safe.

Near the tail end of Phase 2 Heightened Alert when the number of community cases went down to 2 or 3 with number of unlinked cases decreasing too, I was looking forward to a good unmasked jog outdoors for a breath of fresh air. Especially since I have been cooped up at and busy working from home for long hours.

Then comes the anti-climax yesterday: 12 new Covid-19 community cases with 5 currently unlinked.

To me, yesterday’s numbers show that despite the daily number of community cases which can go up or down, all of us have to accept the new normal that Covid-19 is living with us right here on our tiny island. We have to accept the new normal: of masking up, safe distancing, safe management measures, reduced social gathering, reduced outdoor dining and activity, working from home, home-based learning, getting our vaccination, and where necessary Covid-19 testing or jabs. We have to accept that Covid-19 measures here will be like a rubber band, tightened where there is increased risks and vice versa.

Back to my earlier question of whether to jog unmasked outdoors or not, my immediate reply, for myself is no, until low community cases here are sustained. In the interim, I will continue to go for long walks outside, masked for a fresh dose of outside air. Back at home, I will continue to do my meditation, yoga, sit-up and weight training to firm up muscles.

I encourage everyone not to give in to the disruption of Covid-19 to our daily lives. Spend this time while we are at home more to bond with your families, discover another interest from learning and reading from internet, books or watching from Youtube. For me, I always muse about life and find myself musing more about life in this current period. With more time at home, I found myself spending more time on nature spots in Singapore. You may wish to do the same as there is a generous offering of green spots here in Singapore.

I believe all of us will emerge stronger after Covid-19, mentally, physically and spiritually!
