Dear readers, recently I went to a hawker centre on a weekday and was surprised to find to find that there was not much queue at an award winning lor mee, which has also opened a number of outlets around the island.
I have had the lor mee from the stall before and the taste was not bad. But ever since clinching the award and expanded all around the island, what was normally $5 for a large bowl of lor mee now costs $8.
Usually, when I was at the hawker centre, I would not think twice to order from the lor mee stall for a big bowl of lor mee at $8. To be frank, even a large bowl of noodles these days do not seem big anymore or will have me feeling fulfilled.
In the end, I ordered a bowl of Bak Chor Meee soupy noodles at just $4 and the noodles and soup as well as service was excellent! I topped off my hearty meal with a cup of Kopi-Gao at another $1.20. All in, my breakfast costs me only $5.20, which is still lower than the $8 lor mee.
I believe the high cost of living and inflation here would have cause the line of fewer people for the stall. At a time of high cost of living, I believe all of us can make smart choices each day, to save a few dollars here and then. Together, all the savings will accrue to savings much larger and will offset some effects of inflation.
