LAWRENCE WONG 4G LEADER: WHAT TO EXPECT OF SINGAPORE STOCKS NEXT WEEK?

Dear readers, it was announced that Lawrence Wong has been chosen as the leader of Singapore 4G ministers after the close of the Singapore stocks market on 14 Apr 22 (Thu). Singapore stocks market was closed for the Good Friday holidays yesterday (15 Apr 22, Fri). So, what can we expect of the Singapore stocks markets next week?

Well, I believe the appointment of Lawrence Wong as 4G leader and which will pave the way for him to be the next Prime Minister of Singapore will be bullish for Singapore’s equity markets as it further cements the political continuity of Singapore from the 3G leadership to the 4G leadership. Foreign investors will be encouraged at the certainty of political succession from Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong to the 4G leader in Lawrence Wong.

But ultimately, Singapore is not a world of its own. When it comes to the global stock markets and economy, Singapore is a price taker and our stock markets are shaped by the larger developments of the US, China, Europe and the macro geo-political tensions. With Dow Jones, S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite retreating by 0.33%, 1.21% and 2.14% respectively, I believe the performance of the US stocks markets will weigh on Singapore stocks market when it opens next week. In the nearer term, Singapore stocks will be like other stock markets, volatile due to the increase of interest rates.
