HOW TO WALK RAIL GREEN CORRIDOR FROM ONE END TO ANOTHER?

Dear readers, if you are searching on how to walk the rail green corridor from one end to another, you have come to the right place! For recently, I have walked 13.75km of the rail green corridor from one end to another. This walk took me about 2 hours and 30 mins.

I have actually wanted to walk from the Hillview end (near Hillview MRT station) north toward Woodlands and hence took the train to Hillview MRT station to start the walk. At Hillview MRT station, please make sure you exit from the exit which is along the row of shophouses near the Rail Mall, else if you exit from the other exit of the MRT station, there is no way to get to the Truss Bridge without having to turn back and cross the overhead bridge to get to the other side with the shophouses!

There I was on the Truss Bridge and was about to start my walk from Hillview up to Woodlands when I was very surprised to see that the end of the Truss Bridge leading to Woodlands was sealed. It dawned on me that this part of the Rail corridor from Hillview on north to Woodlands was not ready yet, though I understand there are some are some adhoc segments of Rail corridor between Woodlands and Hillview that have been walked by members of public.

Sadly, I had no choice but to make my walk from Hillview south down to King Albert MRT station. I knew that this walk would not take me far since the other time I tried this route down, segments of the walk beyond Holland Road was not ready.

But I was wrong! And my walk turned out to be one of the most fulfilling one I took in my life.

As I walked and walked on the rail corridor, past beyond the iconic Clementi Forest, there was no stoppage of the generally comfortable jogging-type of path. I was surprised to find myself walking down and reaching Buona Vista after an hour or so.

Walking on and on, I lost count of time as my walking journey turned out to be almost endless. I knew this walking path had to stop at the final destination: Tanjong Pagar MRT station. I took pictures of interesting scenes along the way. And for one of the very few moments of my life, after 1.5 hours of walking briskly, my leg started to ache. But I solidered on, as I was made for walking, having served Singapore as an Infantry solider more than 20 years ago!

I walked on and on till day became night. Soon, I was along the path that was parallel Ayer Rajah Expressway and I saw columns of columns of containers in the far distance. I knew I was reaching destination! Just almost like an anti-climax, I saw in the stretch of corridor in front of me what seems to be a sealed path. Then, I heard a jogger mutter to her friend “This is the end point”, so I thought to myself, is the end point just in front and there is no path further to Tanjong Pagar Railway station?

Alas, I finally reached the sealed path of the rail corridor and placed one of my palms on the cardboard sealing off the corridor to signify that I have made it from one far end to the other far end of the rail corridor that has been constructed right now! I found myself right at this end near Kampong Bahru Bus Terminal, walking a total of 13.75 km in 2.5 hours when I think there are more cyclists who covered this distance than walkers right now. A 13.75km brisk walk is rather an achievement as I seldom walked this far and considering the age group I am in now.

Thank You for reading my story! So for those who are interested in walking such a long and scenic walk, my recommendation is:

(1) Start early in the morning or late in the evening when it is not so hot

(2) Give yourself three hours to complete the walk

(3) Start from Kampong Bahru Bus Terminal end (you need to cross the road to land up in a side road pass “Shanghai Chong kee site office TPRS”  (please refer to the Google Maps for this) before you can reach the Rail Green Corridor.

(4) Start your walk and enjoy the scenary! The scenary will change as you walk, first parallel Ayer Rajah Expressway, then to Buona Vista, Holland Road, King Albert and Hillview

(5) When you finally reach Hillview destination, go down a small slope (via staircase) and have your well-deserved breakfast or dinner at Spring Leaf Prata Café! (but right now, I think you can only take away your meals due to Covid-19 measures). Then pass by Cat Café and say Hi to the cats!

That’s all for now, folks! I am a Nature person and having “conquered” Rail Corridor (from one end to the another of the constructed path now), I am setting my sight on other green parts of Singapore next. Clementi Forest, Coney Island, other informal paths of Rail Corridor between Hillview and Woodlands, etc! So stay tuned to my adventures next!
