Dear readers, we are already entering March for the Year. Time has indeed passed so quickly! There has not been any significant movement for Singapore stocks and the Straits Times Index (STI) year-to-date. I mean Singapore stocks had a good start for year 2021 as the STI passed the 3,000 level mark briefly. But then that’s that. The 3,000 level of the STI seems a pretty strong resistance level for Singapore stocks thereafter.
However, I find that we must still give due recognition of the STI stocks which have performed well to date. We also can take a note of which STI stocks are laggard stocks and try to understand more why those laggard stocks are slow-moving.
Without further ado, the best-performing STI stocks for year 2021 to-date (with their year-to-date gains) are:
1. Wilmar International stock (19.8%)
2. HongKong Land stock (10.7%)
3. Jardine C&C stock (9.9%)
From the above list, it seems to me that the two Hong Kong-centric stocks of HongKong Land stock and Jardine C&C stock which were laggards in year 2020 are now playing catchup!
On the other end of the spectrum, the worst-performing STI stocks for year 2021 to-date (with their year-to-date gains) are:
1. Jardine Matheson Holdings (-11.4%)
2. City Developments stock (-10.5%)
3. Mapletree Commercial Trust (-7%)
From the list above, Jardine Matheson Holdings (a Hong Kong centric play) is the worst STI performer year-to-date! This shows that we cannot just assume any Hong Kong centric play as a catchup stock this year! Mapletree Commercial Trust has gone down almost 18% from its 52-week high. As such, investors who invest in Singapore Reits and Trusts here cannot always assume these types of equities are always defensive!
