STRAITS TIMES INDEX SINGAPORE STOCKS MARKETS: YEAR 2022 MID POINT REVIEW

Dear readers, how has the Singapore stocks markets, as measured by the Straits Times Index (STI) performed in the first half of Year 2022?

The STI has weathered a number of volatilities for the first half of the year. Despites the ups and downs, the STI has not crossed below the 3,000 level and this is quite encouraging.

As of 30 Jun 2022, the Straits Times Index (STI) closed at 3,102.21. Compared with the close of 3,123.68 on 31 Dec 2021, the STI has lost around 0.7% year-to-date this year. However, compared with the other regional and international stock markets, the Singapore stock markets is still one of the few winning stock markets for Year 2022 to-date.

Among the STI constituent stocks, some had a worse outing than others. For example, there were a number of oversold STI stocks, for example Genting Singapore stock, Jardine C&C stock, Keppel Corporation stock, SATS stock, UOB stock and Venture stock.

I do not expect the Singapore stock markets and the STI to pick up momentum going forward into the second half of this year. There will still be the developments of the US Federal Reserves’ interest rate hike and this will still shape stock markets going forward. The 3,000 level mark of the STI will continue to be closely watched as a near-term support.
