SPOTLIGHT ON REMISIERS

Dear readers, Singapore Remisiers are in a spotlight as it was announced yesterday that the Society of Remisiers Singapore or SRS has launched the Remisier Development Programme. The programme aims to train remisiers in artificial intelligence, portfolio management and digital marketing.

I also read that the programme is part of the overall initiatives to rejuvenate the Singapore stocks markets.

Indeed, with algorithms-trading, robo-advisories and online trading becoming commonplace now, remisiers seem to be something that many investors do not feature in their trading activities. It was really many years ago that remisiers were highly valued and regarded. I still recall a group of colleagues and I asking many years ago, one colleague what his wife works as and we exclaimed “Wow” when the reply was the the wife was a remisier. This is because back then many years ago, remisiers are associated with high income earners. And then there were the golden days of “remisier Kings” like Peter Lim.

Fast forward to today, the service of remisier might not be widely sought after given firstly online trading which provides traders with direct trading. Then with robo-advisory and advent of online materials, one need not turn to remisiers for investment advice. It is hence timely for the authorities to step in to refresh the skillset of remisiers to ensure that they keep up to the modern times.

On the other hand, how the impact of refreshing the training of remisiers is to the rejuvenation of the Singapore stocks markets remain much to be seen. Just like in any sale, the most important thing is to ensure products are good and attractive to customers. If we have excellent salesmen but lousy products then it still does not bode well in terms of sales.
