Dear readers, it was recently announced that Popular Bookstore was acquired by a Hong Kong Investment firm. When I learnt of the news, I was saddened. This is because I have always recognised Popular Bookstore as a very Singaporean icon, just like how SIA is a Singaporean icon to many. It is sad to learn that a Singaporean icon is sold to an overseas entity.
I have grown up with Popular Bookstore and even as an adult, I enjoy going to a Popular Bookstore to browse through some books or look at some stationery.
For investors’ information, Popular Bookstore was listed on SGX in April 1997 and delisted in May 2015. Following the privatisation of the Bookstore chain, I have noticed that the chain has been closing down some of its book stores and wonder whether the business is doing well.
I will be happy though if following the acquisition, Popular Bookstore finds a business model where it can become even stronger and has more stores in Singapore!
