Dear readers, the government yesterday announced that Singapore will be going back to Phase 2 (Heightened Alert) from 22 July 2021 to 18 August 2021. Key features of Phase 2 Heightened Alert include no outside dining as well as reduced social group sizes from 5 to 2. Phase 2 (Heightened Alert) came on the back of an increase in number of local Covid-19 community cases.
Previously, Singapore was under Phase 3 (Heightened Alert) from 19 July 2021 to 8 August 2021. Hence the rather quick change to Phase 2 (Heightened Alert) might have caught some Singaporeans, especially the F&B players by surprise. I believe Singapore investors are equally trying to make sense of how the change in the different Phase may mean for the Singapore stocks markets here.
As what I have been sharing with readers here, in this new Covid-19 normal, Singapore should be likely frequently transiting between Covid-19 tightening and easing in tandem with the development of the Covid-19 situation here. Hence, investors should invest their monies on a longer timeframe. Investors should invest with the sum of monies that they are okay to leave invested for a period of time. More importantly, investors should not speculate in the current times: e.g. investing on situational plays like healthcare stocks and recovery-theme stocks especially if some of these stocks are without strong fundamentals.
And more importantly, also another point which I frequently share with investors: focus on the larger, broader macro economical theme. Singapore is always a price taker and Singapore’s stocks markets are often shaped by the development of the larger stocks markets in the world like US and China.
Last but not least, do continue to build up your investment war chest, to take advantage of the stocks markets at the most opportune times.
