Dear readers, the Lee Kuan Yew LKY100 coin, or a commemorative S$10 coin marking the 100th birth anniversary of Singapore’s founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew was unveiled on 15 May 2023 by the Monetary Authority of Singapore.
Here are the attributes of the Lee Kuan Yew LKY100 coin from what I have read.
Design of Coin Front: feature of Mr Lee’s name, accompanied with the Singapore Coat of Arms and the words “100th Birth Anniversary”. What Is interesting is that there is a dual latent image showing the year 1923 when viewed from one angle and the year 2023 when viewed from another angle
Design of Coin reverse: portrait of Mr Lee Kuan Yew, with Marina Barrage in the foreground as well as Fullerton Hotel, National Gallery Singapore and Raffles Place financial district skyline as backdrop
Diameter: 30mm (around 22% larger than the current Third Series S$1 coin)
Colour: Gold
Minted: Aluminium Bronze
Well, my thoughts on the coin? Personally, while I feel that Lee Kuan Yew (LKY100) coin is a nice-to-have, good-to-have commemorative item marking the 100th birth anniversary of Mr Lee Kuan Yew, the coin is also not really a need-to-have item since what Mr Lee has done for Singapore is all around us.
Just take a look at the safe and clean water we drink; the clean and healthy air we breathe; the lush greenery and abundant nature spots around us despite Singapore’s relatively small size; good education; healthcare; safety; and in general a good life for all on this country.
Now that Lee Kuan Yew (LKY100) coin has been unveiled, I believe the demand for this collaborative coin will be huge, given the immense stature of Mr Lee! However, I am relieved to read that only Singaporeans and Permanent Residents can apply for the LKY100 coin since I am likely to apply for the coins too! The following are details of the application for the Lee Kuan Yew coin.
Who can apply: Singaporean citizens and permanent residents
How to buy/purchase: to buy/purchase the coin, an application is to be made via the dedicated website: “100th Birth Anniversary of Mr Lee Kuan Yew Commemorative Coin Application”. For individuals who require in-person assistance to submit the application, they can approach any community club, community centre, or ServiceSG centres at One Punngol and Our Tampines Hub
Quantity of Purchase: Each applicant can apply for up to five coins, depending on the demand, applicants may not be allocated the quantity of coins requested but will be assured of being allocated at least one coin
Amount of Purchase: based on the number of coins allocated and at value of each LKY100 coin (i.e. S$10).E.g. if an applicant is allocated 2 LKY100 coins, then the applicant will need to pay S$20 for the coins
Application timeline: From 15 May 2023 to 9 Jun 2023
Result of application: SMS notifications to successful applicants from mid Aug 23
Collection of the coin if application is successful: Coins will be available for collection for successful applicants from September at the bank branch that they indicated in their application. DBS, POSB, OCBC, UOB, Bank of China, HSBC, Maybank and Standard Chartered are distributors of the LKY100 coin.
LKY100 coin will be a coin that Singaporeans can proudly pass down from generations to generations. LKY 100 coin can also serve as a good reminder to our future generations to continue to give their very Best to secure an even brighter future for Singapore!
