Dear readers, I read with disappointment that JCube mall will close down in August this year to make way for a 40-storey residential development, that will include commercial space on the first and second storeys. JCube mall is one of the shopping malls under Capitaland.
There are some whom I have read in the newspapers that also express disappointment and regret over JCube mall closing, all share the same reason that JCube mall hosts Singapore’s first and only Olympic-size ice skating rink.
I seldom patronise JCube mall but of the few times that I am there, I cannot help but feel amazed at the Olympic-size ice skating rink that really makes JCube mall a unique shopping mall in Singapore. Lets be frank, there are just so many seemingly identical malls all over Singapore. Only the iconic ones leave a deep impression of me.
I remember there were efforts to make some parts of Somerset appealing to youngsters in the coming years. Singapore already has a thriving and proud ecosystem in JCube via the ice skating rink that appeals to youngsters. Closing down JCube mall is hence an ironic development in the above front.
