JANUARY 2020 SINGAPORE SAVINGS BONDS

Dear readers, the application of January 2020 Singapore Savings Bonds is now open. Let us look at the average per annum return of January 2020 Singapore Savings Bonds to find out how attractive the Bonds is.

For the first three years, the January 2020 Singapore Savings Bonds offers an interest of 1.52% each year with an increment to 1.73% in Year 4. Thereafter Year 5 to Year 10 will see an increase of the interest offer from the 1.80+% range to 2.04% (in Year 10). However, that said, the average per annum return based on a 10-year holding period for January 2020 Singapore Savings Bonds is a humble 1.76% which is slightly higher than the 1.71% for the December 2019 Singapore Savings Bonds.

For the first-year of holding, the January 2020 Singapore Savings Bonds offers one of the lowest interests of 1.52% ever in the recent tranches of Singapore Savings Bonds. The lowest first-year return was 0.77% for the November 2016 Singapore Savings Bonds.

On a short-term basis, the January 2020 Singapore Savings Bonds is not attractive at all since investors could get higher returns elsewhere (e.g. from other banks products). However for long-term investors who would like to hold their investments over a longer term, the January 2020 Singapore Savings Bonds is still rather decent though I would think investing in equities when the stocks markets correct (say during the 10-year holding period) would provide investors with even more returns eventually.
