Dear readers, I shared with you that recently I was at Lavender looking for good food.
After having a good bowl of Lor Mee, as per my usual practice, I will complete my meal with coffee, and a good one, I hope.
To be fair to the stalls in Lavender, there are quite a number of options when it comes to coffee. But since I am in Lavender, I eventually chose to head down to the old and traditional coffee shop in Heap Seng Leong just nearby.

I have been to Heap Seng Leong before, but only a few times. The coffee shop beside being a vintage coffee shop, was best remembered as having an old uncle in the very signature pajamas and singlet of the old times as the owner. On my two most recent visits to the shop, spaced months apart, I have not seen the uncle already and I did not know whether he has stopped working. Heap Seng Leong is also famed for its Butter Kopi (or Kopi Gu you), much earlier than the modern equivalent of Bulletproof Coffee. I found a Youtube video of Heap Seng Leong below to share with All.
You can see what I had from the top photo in this post: two charcoal-grilled toasts and one cup of Kopi Gu You (butter in Kopi). I much appreciate the way the stall assistants showed tender loving care by scrapping off the excess carbons off the charcoal-grilled toasts before presenting the orders to the customer.
The nice Kopi and toast costs just $2.80, less than the typical $3 or more for just a cup of Kopi that those modern coffee toast chains are selling.
But what’s is more important beside the value-for-money price is the Great food and the nostalgia that a meal in the coffee shop brings diners. And my recent meal in Heap Seng Leong provides me a brief respite from the hectic work life.
I hope more, especially youngsters will head down to Heap Seng Leong to try out Singapore’s popular breakfast meal prepared the good old way. Let’s support the good work, the good food and the good craft of Heap Seng Leong before it is too late.
