DUAL KEY HDB FLATS: MY THOUGHTS

Dear readers, I recently read of the possibility that HDB flats could be turned into dual key HDB flats, just like the same for condominiums.

Supporters or proponents for the above dual key HDB flats concept cited mainly the ability to monetize by renting out the unrequired spaces of the flat. Such monetization can become a source of passive income for the home owners including senior folks who are okay with a downsized space. In gist, the rationale for the dual key HDB flats concept is mainly along the line of investment.

A HDB flat, from 3-room to Executive Maisonette to me is really about enabling homes and this is definitely the rationale to why HDB flats were introduced: to recap, it is all about home ownership.

A dual key HDB flat to me will mean reduced spaces for a family as a home, especially when already, a HDB flat already makes for comprehensive spaces for different purposes serving the family: for example a living room for interactions, master bedrooms for couples and rooms for sleep and study. Going smaller via a dual key HDB flat will mean spaces become effectively reduced.

Some will argue that homeowners can reserve the right to turn their houses into dual key HDB flats if they do not require some space. But could you imagine, if further down the road, as more and more HDB flats becomes dual key, the supply of original HDB flats with all the good spaces for home living will shrink and this will not be a good background for our people to raise a family.
