Dear readers, in this post, I would like to ask you whether you have doubled your monies in the last decade.
Please see the below for the performance of the Straits Times Index (STI) from 2009 (during the last financial crisis) to yesterday.
1 Feb 2009: 1,594.87
20 Aug 21: 3,102.75
Hence, if you have invested in the STI during the last financial crisis and hold your monies till now, your capital would have been doubled!
Take a look now at the similar data for the Dow Jones Index:
1 Feb 2009: 7,062.93
20 Aug 21: 35,120.08
If you have invested in the Dow Jones Index during the last financial crisis and hold your monies till now, your capital would have been 5-times than your original investment! And most importantly, you would have achieved more than double your return in STI with the same investment on 1 Feb 2009!
That could be why I read in some reports that some individuals have referred to the STI as a “Super Terrible Index”. But I continue to still value our very own STI or at least have some portion of investment in it as investing in overseas indices do contain forex exchanges and whether foreign currency will fall one day.
