Dear readers, much has been said of the slew of suggestions to rejuvenate and boost the Singapore stocks markets. Specifically, suggestions on the market supply and market demand side.
I would really suggest that given this very rare comprehensive review of the Singapore stocks markets, the review should be carried out as thorough as possible. And beside the industry players, I have suggested that the review also seeks the views of retail investors and remisiers, i.e. to elicit views from a broad community.
A successful Singapore stocks markets to me is one, where opportunities are available to retail investors to optimize their long-term investing. We should not be seeing sudden delisting of small- and middle-cap listed companies, leaving investors with liquidated losses. When such events do occur, small retail investors could have their entire life savings wiped out. On the other hand, delisted companies do at time continue to operate. What a handful of them can at most do is to issue a certificate of shareholding certification to the retail investors who have lost their monies big time.
Singapore stocks markets has limitation of size. Singapore’s listed companies face the constraint of our small market if they focus just on the Singapore home market. On the other hand, a number of Singapore list companies face risks when venturing abroad and have their bottomlines hit.
And that is why I believe a creative way is needed to rejuvenate the lacklustre Singapore stocks markets. Just as we inject creativity by being first in the world to introduce night racing to the Grand Prix races!
