Dear readers, I have completed my exchange of Chinese New Year (CNY) new notes exchange over the pop up ATMS.
Here are three things to note on the CNY new notes exchange:
First, each transaction allows the requestor to choose a package from any of the following in a withdrawal: (a) $100 (50 pieces of $2), (b) $300 (30 pieces of $10), (c) $500 (10 pieces of $50), and (d) $600 (20 pieces of $10 + 8 pieces of $50). Each requestor can only make 3 withdrawals across all island-wide pop-up ATMs. That means, if a customer makes 3 withdrawals today, he or she has max out his withdrawal limits and can no longer make another withdrawal pop up ATMs anywhere on the island.
Second, expect a long waiting time and be prepared to find some ways to meaningfully spend during the wait. For myself, I spent a total of 45 minutes in the queue before finally receiving the new CNY notes. I expect as Chinese New Year draws closer, the queues at the Pop Up ATMs will only become longer. There is also a possibility that new notes can run out if the demand becomes higher than expected. Hence do exchange for your new CNY notes early if you intend to do so. I also spent the waiting time, meaningfully reading the news on my phone, an activity which I have pre-planned for the wait.
Third and last but not least, be prepared to bring along your ATM card to enable the transactions! And that is not all, do also raise your daily withdrawal limit via your bank app given that the transaction limit for the new notes exchange can easily be high if a customer is interested in more than two transactions.
