Dear readers, earlier this year, I watched the “Food Feud” production by Mediacorp featuring two shops selling Singapore’s most famous Banana Pies: Dona Manis cake shop and Aunty Peng. The two shops operate side by side in basement 1 of Tanjong Katong Shopping Centre.
If you have missed the production, you can watch the show below.
There have been many reviews on the social media featuring the “rivalry” between the two famous Banana shops and they include reviews from 8Days and SethLui.
After watching the aforementioned show, I decided to try out myself which of the two shops offered better Banana pies. I have since tasted the banana pies from the two shops and the below are my verdict.
Dona Manis: always the shop with more human queues than Aunty Peng. I believe this is in mainly due to the better marketing and branding of the shop than Aunty Peng. In fact, for those who are new to the banana cakes, by having the banana pies featured out in front prominently of the shop in Dona Manis certain makes it easier for customers to decide which banana pies to try first if one has not tasted before the pies from any of the two shops. This is hence why I bought my banana pies from Dona Manis first simply because the banana pies are easy to see and order. For Aunty Peng, the banana pies are not easily found as the front of Aunty Peng shop features other food stuff.
Taste wise, I find Dona Manis banana pie not the exact taste I will associate with one that is raved. I find the taste of Dona Manis’ banana pie not very integrated: the banana at the bottom of the pie seems and taste detached such that it is akin to me eating the flour sides of the pie and bananas separately.

Aunty Peng: on the first bite of Aunty Peng’s banana pie, I am filled with the goodness of a well old school banana pie that simply feels so complete and so integrated. The banana stuffed in the pie is solid and goes together with the pie to give to the diner what a good integration of the banana tastes like and not separate banana and separate pie. And I love that Aunty Peng’s banana pie is also crunchy beside being very balanced, very wholesome, very complete and is the Best Banana pie in Singapore in my opinion!
