ARE SINGAPORE INVESTORS THE HAPPIEST IN SOUTH EAST ASIA?

Dear readers, I read an article that said, according to the World Happiness Report 2021, Singapore is ranked the happiest country in South East Asia. When I learnt of Singapore’s ranking, I was a bit curious. A bit curious as recently Singapore is ranked as the world’s most tired country. And Singapore is also ranked No. 2 in terms of the most amount of time spent on work. And now we are ranked as the happiest country in South East Asia. Hence, are Singaporeans happiest because we work long hours?

Of course, the above is just a joke as each ranking should be read in its own context and merits.

On a serious note: if Singapore is the happiest country in South East Asia, are Singapore investors then the happiest investors in South East Asia? To answer this question, I looked at selected South East Asia stock markets and their year-to-date capital performance (as at 3 Sep 2021).

Thailand’s SET is up 13.6% year-to-date.

Indonesia’s JCI is 2.5% north this year to-date.

Malaysia’s KLCI has gone down 2.3% for this year.

For Singapore, Singapore’s Straits Times Index is up 8.4% year-to-date.

So, what I could say is that Singapore’s investors should still feel happy as compared to their Southeast Asia counterparts.

Of course, one of the world’s happiest investors this year-to-date must have been Indian investors: India NIFTY has headed up 23.7% for this year already.
