APRIL 2020 SINGAPORE SAVINGS BONDS (SSB)

Dear readers, the application of the April 2020 Singapore Savings bonds is expected to be open in the first week of next month (March 2020). Of the $150 million March 2020 Savings Bonds on offer, only $43.621m was applied for and $42.492m issued. The issuance percentage was only an unimpressive 28.3%.

The outcome of the March 2020 Singapore Savings Bonds application and issuance was not surprising given that the first-year return was only 1.43% and the average 10-year return at 1.71% Compared the average 10-year return of the March 2020 bonds to that for Feb 2020 bonds (1.75%), Jan 2020 bonds (1.76%). Dec 2019 (1.71%), Nov 2019 (1.74%).

I expected that with the volatilities in the stocks markets where more investors flock to bonds, the 10-year average yield of the April 2020 Singapore Savings Bonds could at most be on par to the 1.71% to 1.74% in recent tranches.
