Dear readers, today is the last day of Year 2023, how are you feeling right now?
The Singapore stocks markets, as measured by the Straits Times Index (STI), closed Year 2023 at 3,240.27 as per the STI closing on the last trading day of 29 Dec 2023.
I am not sure how you will describe the performance of the Singapore stocks markets for the year, especially if you are asked to describe it with a four-letter word.
I think it depends on how well your investing outing in the Singapore stocks markets has been, assuming that you are an investor in Singapore equities.
The four-letter word could be “Good” if you have achieved great returns, on the other end of the spectrum, the four-letter word could also be something else.
For myself, I rather don’t let emotion rule my head and will choose to give an objective assessment for a four-letter word of my choice.
Given that the Singapore stocks markets closed last year (Year 2022) at 3,251.32, the performance of the Singapore stocks markets is -0.34%, compared with last year. Hence, my four-letter word to describe Singapore stocks markets for the year will be “FLAT”.
While the performance of the Singapore stock markets might have been flat, other stocks markets have performed well for the year. For example: US’ NASDAQ is up by about 50% from a year ago.
Well, as we are into a new year tomorrow, it is time to focus on what the stock markets for Year 2024 will bring to investors in terms of opportunities.
For Year 2024, again, I would caution investors to prepare for a possible corrections in the stocks markets. I hope you have heeded my earlier calls to stand by with some liquidity as a buffer against possible economic uncertainties and or use it as an investment warchest when it is time to be greedy when other are fearful, to quote Warren Buffet!
