Dear readers, Singapore’s National Day Parade will be postponed to 21 Aug 2021 given the current local Covid-19 situation. Despite the postponement of the National Day Parade, there is still a debate on whether the NDP should be cancelled altogether, instead of being postponed. There was in fact, an article on today’s “The Sunday Times” titled “Should the show go on? Decision on NDP divide opinion” on comments, interviews given by different individuals on their take of whether NDP should be postponed or cancelled.
I acknowledge the concerns of many that this NDP 2021, even with the best safe distancing and safe management measures that organisers could adopt, may become an event where transmission of Covid-19 could still take place. This is because, while we can only minimise but not totally ward off the spread of the infectious Covid-19 strain that seems to be circulating in our local community now.
Reasons cited in “The Sunday Times” article for the continual holding of NDP 2021 include showing to the world that Singapore can still function normally, live with Covid-19 and pull off something as important as our NDP; as well as lifting the sentiments of dour sentiments of Singaporeans living with Covid-19 now.
Japan 2020 Olympics Games just opened on 23 Jul 2021. The opening ceremony was and all the games was delivered to a stadium and venues without spectators.
So, why not make Singapore National Day Parade (NDP) 2021 a spectator-less event? We can then have the best of both worlds: pulling off NDP 2021 and minimise possible contact for Covid-19 to spread.
